The ABCs of Online Dating by Clark Summers
Online dating just means finding people to date on a website, usually consisting of personal ads or profiles. These sites are used by all sorts of people to find dates. They can do so by searching or browsing a site, and finding profiles that interest them.
Some dating sites are free to use while others charge a membership fee. Sometimes it'si free to read profiles, but contacting someone through the website requires a paid membership or an one-time fee.
However, the basic premise of an online dating website is the same. An user enters their profile. This is then saved on the website, and can be read by any authorized site user. Almost all dating sites have a powerful search capability that can match profiles on the basis of age, gender, community, interests, etc.
Most dating sites are very strict about privacy. They route the contact mails through their system so that neither party will ever see the real email address of the other. I suggest opening a separate email account for online dating, instead of using your main email address.
Another important thing about most paid sites is that they allow people to post or browse profiles only after paying the subscription fee. Also, only members can contact the site users. On some sites, women can join free but men must pay.
Most sites advise you to avoid divulging personal information like your full name, address, home phone number, place of employment, etc. This is sound advice, and must be taken seriously. There is no need to expose yourself to Internet stalkers.
However, there is no harm in revealing your interests in full. It also makes sense to post a good photo of yourself on the site. Profiles with photos get more responses than profiles lacking them.
Your first communication should be through email. The second step should be to talk on the phone. This should be done once you develop rapport with your online friend. I don't suggest that you reveal your home or work phone number. The best thing is to use your cell, which does not reveal your home address.
The final step should be to invite the person to a date in a public place. Do not meet them at their home or yours the first time.
